Wild Honey



Brunch on a busy Saturday at Wild Honey's Scotts Square outlet as we didn't fancy standing in line for a table at the Mandarin Gallery store.



The Place

Thankfully this outlet takes reservations but do book early as I overheard a wait staff informing a dejected walk in customer that 1 week advance reservations are recommended. And the full house, coupled with a 90 minute per table dining window proves her point.

The place isn't big and certain tables are placed quite close to each other (go for those at the side if possible), which makes for hush conversation. Oh wait, I forgot. The whole place is so noisy that I probably wouldn't be able to hear myself shout. Okay, that's an exaggeration but by golly, it sounded like a marketplace! You can basically throw any notion of a peaceful and relaxing brunch out of the window!



Scandinavian

I'm no big fan of salmon and this dish wasn't about to convert me. The grilled fish was pedestrian, if I may say. And the hollandaise sauce atop was just too mild to be of much use. I did like the bed of crisp rosti though.



English

I didn't quite take to this dish either as I thought that the scrambled eggs could have been milkier and the bacon, a little less charred at the corner. The potato cubes could have also been a little more crisp instead of coming across as limp and soggy. And the signature brioche left me sorely disappointed. I had envisioned something along the lines of Guy Savoy's Brioche Feuilletée aux Champignons et Truffes but this was just a dense block of bread which I certainly couldn't appreciate.



Caribbean

Greedy us had the "Caribbean" for afters as it seemed like the only dish that qualified as dessert on the menu. As much as I hate to say it, it would have been a pleasant ending to the meal if only there weren't consistency issues. For example, some of the waffles were noticeably darker than the others and some mango slices made me cringe with their sourness. To be fair, I loved the passion fruit syrup/cream and the idea of combining fresh mangoes and bananas with crispy edged waffles. Now if only they worked on their consistency...



Bill

I don't know about you, but $82 for a 2 pax brunch in a less than soothing setting coupled with average quality food, does seem quite over the top. I seriously fail to understand the hype. Herd mentality at work, maybe?

Flutes at the Fort II



We were itching for a nice brunch place without your usual weekend crowd and decided on Flutes, having dined there for dinner a couple of years back (when Francois Mermilliod, owner and chef of Absinthe, was still head chef).




The Place

Dining in the day offers a much better view of the lush greenery surrounding the restaurants as compared to dining at night. It also gives a notion of serenity and escapism from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. But maybe it's just self delusion. Haha.



U.S. Asparagus with poached egg, smoked salmon, hollandaise sauce

Both of us started off with the asparagus with poached egg and smoked salmon which was honestly quite decent though the asparagus did come across as a wee bit too soft. I did appreciate the buttery aftertaste though. Another gripe I had was that the poached egg wasn't runny enough but at least the hollandaise sauce had a nice savoury kick to it.



Beer Battered Snapper with fries, mixed leaf, malt vinegar or tartare sauce

I'm no fan of fried fish, especially those that come coated with flour and deep fried. But I must say this was quite palatable. The fish wasn't exactly very sweet but the flesh was firm without the flour being overly thick. And there was a tingling beer aftertaste. Best eaten with a dash of lemon and tartar sauce.



Beef Burger with sunny-side egg, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, kikorangi

I happened to be in a burger mood that day so naturally I perked up when I saw it on the brunch menu. I wouldn't say it was great but it was decent enough to satisfy a craving. The patty was a little overdone (read. Dry) but surprisingly flavourful. I could make out the unevenness in the patty so it was likely to have been hand chopped. I did think the buns could have been toasted a little longer though.



Earl Grey Crème Brûlée with black sesame ice-cream, strawberries

Aesthetics (or lack of) aside, the creme brulee sported a nice thin layer of burnt caramel atop smooth, earl grey tinted custard. The scoop of black sesame ice cream was seriously quite a turn off especially when it started to melt but to be fair, it was quite rich and probably more suited to people who like black sesame. Tar anyone?



Belgian Waffle with strawberries, fresh cream, butter and maple syrup

To round up, we had the belgian waffles, which were light but nothing exceptional. Served up with butter cubes and rather diluted maple syrup. Disappointing.



Bill

A peaceful brunch for 2 cost us to the tune of about $45/pax. Standards seem to have plummeted since the departure of Chef Mermilliod. I probably won't be back unless food quality picks up.

Teochew City Seafood Restaurant II - A Pictorial

A group of us dropped by Teochew City @ Centrepoint one Friday evening to escape from the mad crowds that descend upon Orchard Road every evening.










We managed to escape the crowds but at a price though. Food quality was generally hovering around the average mark and hardly worth the price - a big difference from my previous visit some years back.
